Defeating The 4 O'clock Doldrums

Don't know about you but the hours post nap (if there is any nap to speak of) pre-dinner are among the hardest in our house. It can seem SOOO long. And I so don't want a T.V. junkie for a kid (though I judge NO ONE in this regard...sometimes a mom's gotta do what a mom's gotta do to survive the day...)Tivo can be a blessing and a curse in this regard. How do you make the hours fly by?

Coffee (for me, not the kid) works wonders!
go OUT to a park or take a walk
go on a snail hunt and collect snails in bushes etc.
a favorite DVD and a snack
special activity- art or a toy that only comes out in the afternoons

I've been including Hannah in the making dinner process whenever possible. I try to give her jobs that she likes and that take a long time (i.e. pulling all of the cilantro leaves off the stems).

Sometimes, especially on colder days, we take a bath/swim in the tub during this time. I set it up with measuring cups, funnels, cups, etc and let her hang out in there until she's a raisin.

Have a small bin of toys that she loves that only comes out during this time. We ended up with 3 or 4 that rotated. They always were ones that included easy clean-up so I didn't have to deal with a big mess right before dinner!
